Asma rejects SC decision on PCO Judges

Issuing contempt of court notices to the PCO-judges is extremely unreasonable: Asma Jahangir.File photo

LAHORE: President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Asma Jahangir expressed her displeasure over the Supreme Courts decision to frame charges on the PCO judges and said the decision would weaken the foundation of judiciary.

While addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Asma said that issuing contempt of court notices to the PCO-judges was extremely unreasonable.

It was better to send these judges home or send references against them to the Supreme Judicial Council because they were dysfunctional but still sitting judges, she said.

It never happened in the history that sitting judges were prosecuted for contempt of court. A wrong act could not be treated with a wrong punishment, Asma said.

She suggested that a check and balance system should be introduced for appointment of judges.

Asma also dispelled the media reports saying the SC issued notices to former president Pervez Musharraf, former prime minister Shaukat Aziz, Corps Commanders and many retired army officers. The media misinterpreted the courts proceedings, she added.

To a question, she said that the court should decide the controversy of granting immunity to Raymond Davis instead of the government.
