Sessions Judge disposes of habeas corpus plea against SHO Women police station

KARACHI: District & Sessions Judge, Central, Karachi, Ms. Soofia Latif disposed of a habeas corpus application after SHO Women Police Station undertook no citizen will be detained illegally in future.

Complainant Mohammad Arsalan filed habeas corpus application US 491 CrPC, stating police picked up his brother, Niaz, from his house on Jan 6, 2011 and demanded Rs 300,000 bribe for release. He alleged his brother was unlawfully detained at women police station, Liaquatabad and prayed to order his recovery. DJ Ms Sofia Latif had appointed concerned Judicial Magistrate, who got freed Niaz from unlawful detention at police station as found no entry in Roznamcha and directed SHO Shabana Naz to appear on Saturday with complete record. On Saturday, SHO Ms Shabana Naz appeared & submitted man was taken into custody on basis of suspicion of his involvement in criminal case. Judge Ms. Sofia Latif expressed dissatisfaction over statement of SHO & questioned why a male suspect was taken into custody despite Women police station was specifically established to arrest female accused. SHO Ms Shabanam who was directed to sit till rising of court as punishment, sought apology and undertook that no citizen will be kept in illegal detention in future. Meanwhile, complainant Arsalan & detainee Niaz forgave her. DJ Ms. Sofia Latif in view of apology sought by SHO and statements of complainant, disposed of habeas corpus application.
