PPP, MQM fail to bridge differences

KARACHI: Peoples Party and the Muttahida failed to narrow down their differences on targeted killings and law and order situation on Thursday, formed a subcommittee to discuss and resolve day to day affairs and issues confronting in the province, and to ensure credible liaison and coordination between the two for addressing those issues on priority basis.

The decision was taken in a meeting held at Chief Minister House. Governor of Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ebad Khan, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Interior Federal Minister Mr. Rehman Malik jointly chaired the meeting. It was also attended by PPP leaders Pir Mazharul Haq, Agha Siraj Durrani, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Mr. Muhmmad Ayaz Soomro and Engineer Rafique.

MQM leaders included Dr. Farooq Sattar, Mr. Babar Khan Ghouri, Mr. Adil Siddiqui , Mr. Waseem Aftab and Dr. Sagheer Ahmed. Chief Secretary Sindh Syed Ghulam Ali Shah Pasha also attended the meeting.

Sources said that MQM emphasized that its prescription of r deweaponization was the best approach while the PPP was skeptic and believed there was a need for substantial amendments. Lack of any categorical statement on target killing and operation launched by the Rangers was interpreted as difference of opinion persisting between the two coalition partners. There was no mention of the APC planned by the provincial government and the official statement issued after the meeting also did not say whether or not MQM will participate.

Both sides discussed issues and problems on prio! rity bas is under mutual understanding on cordial basis. They resolved to work together under working relationship based on guidance of President Mr. Asif Ali Zardari and MQM leader Altaf Hussain and joint efforts will be made to enhance harmony among both parties.

Both the parties expressed their concern on law and order situation prevailing in the province particularly in Karachi, and decided to cooperate each other for promoting the peaceful atmosphere, official said.

It was decided that the next meeting of both parties will be held in the first week of February. Leaders of both parties reaffirmed their pledge to enhance national interests instead of any personal interests. The meeting also decided to evolve concerted efforts for creation of better atmosphere in their ranks, and coordinated measures for economic enhancement in the province.
