ISLAMABAD: Saud Aziz, who was police chief of Rawalpindi when Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on Dec 27, 2007, has refused to hand over his mobile phone to the Federal Investigation Agencys (FIA) Joint Investigation Team on that day.

I used two to three mobile phone sets since 2007. I dont know where is the mobile phone that I used on Dec 27, said Saud Aziz while giving his latest statement to Rao Anwar, a Superintendent of Police in Karachi who was recently inducted into the FIAs JIT probing Bhuttos assassination, sources told Dawn News here on Thursday.

FIA prosecutor Ch.Zulfiqar had acquired an eight-day physical remand of former Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad, a former Superintendent of Police (SP) at Rawal Town, for the recovery of the mobile phone sets which were used by the two officers on that day of Ms Bhuttos murder.

The sources claim that it was the fifth time when S.P Rao Anwar grilled the former CPO Saud Aziz in FIA custody.

Sources privy to the developments claim that during the session Saud Aziz initially contested that he had provided proper security to the former prime minister by deploying 1,280 policemen at Liaqat Bagh, Rawalpindi.

When Rao Anwar pointed out certain security lapses in Benazir Bhuttos security, Saud Aziz accepted his negligence, but in the same breath said: I was not involved in any conspiracy against Benazir Bhutto,

The sources claimed that during the interrogation Saud Aziz also pointed out that according to his informatio! n, Benaz ir had received the last phone call from Asif Ali Zardari.

Hence the President should also be investigated. He added.

At the same time, he claimed that Ms Bhuttos Blackberry was still with the President.

Dawn News contacted one of the passengers who were accompanied by Ms Bhutto in her last ride. The close aide said that no one saw Benazir Bhutto attending any call that day as she preferred sending messages by Blackberry to phone.

The source also told dawn that after the assassination, Ms Bhuttos Blackberry was taken by her servant Abdul Razak and later handed over to Asif Ali Zardari.

Saud Aziz also recalled that at the time of the attack on Ms Bhutto, he was having tea with the then District Coordination Officer. He also demanded that all the people who were aboard the vehicle of Benazir Bhutto should be investigated.

The FIA will produce Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad before the Anti- Terrorist Court on Saturday after completion of their physical remand.
